1. Segment 1
PREVIOUSLY ON 24:
AUDREY
My dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer about a year ago.
JACK
How long does he have?
AUDREY
Not long…a few months, maybe…six at most.
———
TONY
Where is she?
JACK
Tony…
TONY
No…no!
JACK
I’m sorry, Tony…I’m so sorry.
TONY
No!
Tony gets up out of the bed and starts wandering around looking for Michelle, as if he believes he’ll find her working at one of the stations the way she used to.
——–
Jack is holding a hostile, TERKOVSKY, at gunpoint.
JACK
When is this going to happen?
TERKOVSKY
One hour. The cannisters are equipped with explosive devises that will be detonated remotely.
JACK
How do we shut them down?
TERKOVSKY
You need a series of access codes…that is all I will say until I see the agreement in writing.
CURTIS
I don’t think we have a choice but to give in to his demands.
—
TONY
(angrily)
I don’t want to waste time staring at her body…I want to help find the bastards who did this to her!
LATER:
Tony enters a room, shuddering when he sees Michelle’s body laid out. He starts trembling as he approaches, touching her head and taking her hand, feeling for a pulse and placing his hand on her heart, shaking his head defiantly as the reality of her death starts to sink in. The following takes place between 6 AM and 7 AM on Day 5:
FADE IN:
INT. CTU
CONFERENCE ROOM
AUDREY RAINES is on the phone briefing DOD on the situation.
AUDREY
(on phone)
They apprehended the hostile…we’re waiting for the president to sign the agreement granting him immunity in exchange for information…CTU believes that with his help we can stop the remaining cannisters of nerve gas from being released. Alright, I’ll keep you posted.
She hangs up and her phone rings again.
AUDREY
Audrey Raines.
She is surprised to hear her father on the other end. His voice sounds weak.
HELLER (O.S.)
Audie, is that you?
AUDREY
Yeah. Yeah, Dad, it’s me…are you okay? You don’t sound so good.
SPLIT SCREEN
HELLER
I’m okay, sweetie…don’t worry. Listen, I need to talk to you about something.
AUDREY
Of course. What’s going on?
HELLER
After this crisis is over, what are they going to do about Jack?
AUDREY
How…how do you know about…
HELLER
Someone from DOD thought I should know. Do you have any idea what’s going to happen to him after this is over?
AUDREY
(fighting back tears)
He…he promised the president he’s going to disappear again…I don’t know where he’s going to go…nobody does.
HELLER
You still love him, don’t you?
AUDREY
I don’t know…I can’t…I can’t let myself think about how I feel…not when I know that I’ll probably never see him again.
HELLER
Audie, spare me the bullshit. Do you love him or not?
AUDREY
(teary-eyed)
Yes.
HELLER
Wherever he disappears to, I want you to go with him.
AUDREY
I can’t do that.
HELLER
Yes, you can. I have some contacts all over the world who can help you get away from here safely without being discovered.
AUDREY
I can’t…I can’t leave you.
HELLER
Audie, listen to me. The doctor tells me I don’t have much time left…a month, maybe two if I’m lucky. All I want is to die knowing that you’re happy.
Audrey becomes more emotional upon hearing this, having thought that her father had longer to live.
HELLER
I want you to forget about me and follow your heart…promise me you’ll do that, Audie.
Audrey hesitates, wiping tears from her eyes.
HELLER
Please, sweetheart, you’ve got to do this for me. You’ve got to promise me…
AUDREY
Alright…I…I promise.
HELLER
Thank you.
AUDREY
I love you, Dad.
HELLER
I love you too, sweetheart.
CTU: TECH 1
START ON TONY ALMEIDA, typing furiously. O.S., we HEAR JACK BAUER and CURTIS MANNING discussing the situation.
JACK (O.S.)
Where are we on the immunity agreement?
CURTIS (O.S.)
The attorney general’s reviewing it now. It should be here any minute.
JACK (O.S.)
We’re running out of time.
Tony overhears the conversation and jumps up. TRACK WITH HIM as he leaves the room and follows Jack and Curtis down the hall.
TONY
What the hell? Did I just hear what I think I just heard?
Jack sighs.
JACK
(to Curtis)
Let me know as soon as the agreement is signed.
CURTIS
Alright.
Jack leads Tony back into Tech 1.
JACK
Tony, we don’t have a choice. We have credible intelligence that indicates that the other 19 canisters are all going to be launched within the hour. We don’t have time to break him.
TONY
So you’re just going to let him go free.
JACK
After he tells us what we need to know, yes. I know it doesn’t seem fair…I’m not happy about it either.
TONY
Doesn’t seem fair? Jack, these bastards killed my wife!
JACK
I know.
Tony sighs angrily and wipes his forehead, trying to keep from falling apart. We HEAR Curtis through Jack’s earpiece.
CURTIS (O.S.)
Jack, the agreement’s here.
JACK
Alright, I’ll be right there.
He gets up and walks toward the door, then turns around and looks at Tony sympathetically.
JACK
I’m sorry, Tony.
Tony doesn’t say anything. He knows Jack is right but is unwilling to accept it.
CUT TO:
CTU HOLDING ROOM
START ON TERKOVSKY hancuffed to the table.
OUTSIDE THE ROOM
JACK
What have you got?
CURTIS
The cannisters are scheduled to be detonated remotely at 7 AM. Using the codes Terkovsky has, we should be able to stop the activation sequence.
JACK
Alright. Get this to Chloe and Edgar now.
He turns to the guard standing in the corner.
JACK
He stays here until we verify all of this.
The guard nods. FOLLOW Jack and Curtis down the hall. ON TONY, who watches them through the window. When the coast is clear, he tiptoes into the hallway.
OUTSIDE THE HOLDING ROOM
The guard is looking in at Terkovsky. Suddenly, Tony comes up
from behind and knocks him out, then grabs his GUN and starts frantically
pressing buttons on the access pad.
DOWNSTAIRS
Jack and Curtis are walking over to Chloe’s station when they hear a loud THUD.
Jack looks upstairs and realizes instantly what is going on.
JACK
Damn it!
He charges up the stairs just in time to see Tony enter the holding area.
He realizes that Tony has jammed the codes, so he CRACKS the glass open with his GUN and runs through just as Tony is about to SHOOT Terkovsky.
JACK
Tony, drop the gun!
Jack’s entrance startles Tony enough to make him pause for a moment, giving Jack time to grab his arm and pull him away.
Tony clutches his gun to his body so Jack can’t take it.
Jack puts himself between Tony and Terkovsky and manages to get Tony out into the hallway, where he shoves him up against a wall and holds him at gunpoint.
TONY
Go ahead, shoot me, Jack. You’ll be doing me a favor.
JACK
Tony, come on. Give me the gun.
Tony refuses.
JACK
You don’t want to do this.
TONY
Yeah, I do, Jack. And nothing you say is going to stop me. I don’t care if I go to jail for the rest of my life…these terrorists killed my wife and I am not going to let them get away with it.
JACK
Tony, please, just take a moment to think this through.
At this point, Bill and several guards are at the scene. Jack motions for them to stand back and let him handle this.
JACK
I know what you’re going through…I’ve been there.
TONY
Yeah, and you did exactly what I’m about to do. And don’t give me that BS about Nina going for her gun and threatening you. We both know that you were looking for an excuse to kill her.
JACK
You’re right. And you know what? After I shot Nina, I felt even worse than I did before. I thought it would make me feel better to sow my oats and get revenge but it didn’t. Because after I shot her, I had to come to terms with the fact that Teri was still dead. Getting rid of Nina didn’t bring her back.
TONY
That’s not the point, Jack.
JACK
Killing that man in there is not going to bring Michelle back, do you understand me?
Tony nods, still defiant and determined.
JACK
It’s not going to bring her back, Tony. It’s not going to bring her back.
Jack’s words begin to resonate with Tony as he keeps repeating them. His anger and defiance slowly turn to defeat and despair as he holds out his gun meekly and lets Jack take it. Tony slumps against the wall and down to the floor and starts sobbing hysterically as realization sinks in. Jack crouches down and grips his shoulder, wanting to help but feeling powerless. Guilt overwhelms him as he remembers that he is the cause of his friend’s sorrows.
CUT TO:
CTU MAIN FLOOR
Everyone is holding their breath watching the screen as Chloe and Edgar key in the deactivation sequence.
ON SCREEN:
A map shows the locations of canisters 1-19. Canisters 1-16 are blue, meaning they have been deactivated. Everyone cheers as the number 17, which is positioned in Houston, TX, turns blue.
CHLOE’S SCREEN
Shows her pressing “ok” to the deactivation sequence for canister 18.
BIG SCREEN
Shows the number 18, in Minnesota, slowly turn from red to blue. Everyone cheers again.
EDGAR’S SCREEN
Shows him confirm the deactivation sequence for canister 19, which is somewhere in Southern California.
BIG SCREEN
Shows no activity. Everyone waits, growing increasingly anxious. Chloe runs over to Edgar’s screen.
CHLOE
Relax, everyone. Edgar probably did it wrong.
EDGAR
(offended)
What the hell? I did the exact same thing as for all the other ones.
CHLOE
Move over.
Edgar indignantly does as she orders and watches as she types something into his machine.
ON SCREEN:
No activity. Number 19 remains red.
EDGAR
See? I told you it wasn’t going to work.
BILL
