“3:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M.”

PREVIOUSLY ON 24:

From 11 AM episode:

JACK

Why the hell are you back at CTU? I thought you wanted something different for your life.

CHASE

I did. But three years ago, CTU Washington/Baltimore implored me to come back there after their head of field ops was killed in the line of duty the same day you disappeared. I resisted at first, but I knew they needed me, and I couldn’t walk away.

JACK

Couldn’t walk away.

Jack shakes his head, exasperated.

JACK

That was my problem. I couldn’t walk away either, and look at me now. I’ve failed everyone I ever cared about, and now I’m being handed over to the Chinese to be tried as a war criminal. Don’t do this to yourself, Chase. Don’t do this to your daughter. Get out now while you still can.

From 2 PM Episode:

HELLER

My son has been abducted by terrorists. Someone is trying to frame my daughter for an attempt to assassinate the president and you expect me to remain calm?

AUDREY

I just got a call from Tad Williams…He says he has information that may help us find my brother but he can’t give it to me over the phone.

JACK

Where does he want you to meet him?

AUDREY

A parking garage near 16th and I.

HELLER (O.S.)

JACK, ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND? You knocked out a Secret Service agent, hijacked a government vehicle, and put my daughter in a potentially dangerous situation…how do you know this isn’t some kind of a setup?

JACK

Mr. President, I had to bury the woman I loved once. I’m not going to do it again.

INT. PARKING GARAGE

Jack stares at the vehicle coming down the ramp suspiciously.

JACK

Agent Sterling, do any of your vehicles have Virginia license plates?

STERLING (O.S.)

No, all the cars on this detail are DC.

Jack bolts out of the car and starts running toward Audrey.
Someone gets out of the vehicle holding a GUN.

JACK

(screaming)

Audrey, get away from there!

Tad runs and ducks behind another parked car. Audrey turns around just in time to see Jack get SHOT in the arm and FALL to the ground.

Audrey drops her cell phone when she sees Jack get shot. She runs over to him and crouches down.

JACK

Take the keys and get in the car.

Audrey hesitates,

JACK

Go, NOW!

Trembling, she picks up the keys and runs toward the vehicle she and Jack came in.

SERIES OF SHOTS:

1) Secret Service agents swarm Audrey and herd her into a car.

2) Jack uses his good arm to pick up his gun and starts shooting at the hostile vehicle.

3) Audrey’s Secret Service detail starts driving down the ramp.

EXT. PARKING GARAGE - CONTINUOUS

The Secret Service vehicle exits the garage and starts to pull away. Suddenly, a deafening noise is heard. Audrey screams in horror as she hears the sound.

AUDREY

JACK!!!!!

She jumps out of the car and tries to run back into the garage but is restrained by Secret Service. Tears stream down her face as the vehicle drives away.

INT. PARKING GARAGE - CONTINUOUS

A thick cloud of smoke blocks the scene of the explosion, making it impossible to see what has happened.

EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE - ARLINGTON, VA

A Hispanic man in his early 40’s is sitting in a beat up Chevy Cavalier waiting for someone, looking nervous. A long black limousine pulls up, and CHRISTOPHER YOUNG, a bald white man in his mid-50’s dressed in a business suit gets out and approaches the Chevy.

CHRISTOPHER

Are you Marco Almeida?

MARCO

Yeah, that’s me. Here…here’s the laptop.

He hands Christopher a briefcase. Christopher opens it, takes out the laptop, and sees a STICKER that reads “United States Department of Defense”.

The following takes place between 3 PM and 4 PM on the day of the Presidential Inauguration:

ACT ONE

FADE IN:

INT. WHITE HOUSE - OVAL OFFICE

START ON MIKE NOVICK, talking to CTU Director SUSAN WALKER on the PHONE.

MIKE

(on phone)

Were there any other agents inside?

SUSAN (O.S.)

No…all CTU and Secret Service agents have been accounted for.

MIKE

Alright, I’ll update the President…make sure you let me know as soon as you know about Jack.

FOLLOW Mike as he hangs up the phone and approaches Acting President JAMES HELLER.

HELLER

What’s going on?

MIKE

Audrey’s fine…there was a shooting and an explosion but she’s unharmed…Secret Service got her out before the bomb went off.

HELLER

Jesus Christ! Were there any casualties?

MIKE

Unknown at this point.

Heller notices Mike’s troubled expression and feels a sinking feeling in his stomach.

HELLER

Where’s Jack?

Mike sighs.

MIKE

Unknown at this time, sir. Susan said he hasn’t responded on COMM since the explosion…they’re looking for him now.

Heller wipes his forehead and sighs. His concern is clear in spite of his earlier outbursts.

MIKE

It’s unclear who the target was. At this time Secret Service is not classifying the incident as an AOP, though they’re going to up her security detail for the time being.

HELLER

Where is she? Is she back here yet?

MIKE

Tony Almeida asked that she be brought to CTU so she could be debriefed and examined by medical. Do you want me to preempt that and have her brought back here?

HELLER

No, that’s alright…just get her on the phone.

MIKE

I tried…Susan said she was pretty shaken up after the explosion…Tony’s on the phone with her now trying to calm her down.

Heller nods, looking hurt but knowing he doesn’t have the right to complain.

AERIAL SHOT: DOWNTOWN WASHINGTON, DC - DAY

Shot encompasses the White House, the Washington Monument, the Capitol, and the Potomac River.

ZOOM TO:

ESTABLISHING SHOT: EXT. I ST. NW

A SECRET SERVICE VEHICLE drives down the street. The vehicle’s windows are tinted, but we can see the silhouette of a trembling figure inside the car.

MATCH CUT TO:

INT. SECRET SERVICE VEHICLE / EST. I ST.

AUDREY RAINES is staring blankly out the window as she talks to TONY ALMEIDA on her CELL PHONE, not bothering to dry the tears that keep falling as the car drives away.

She is clearly still shaken up from the explosion, and she is terrified that something happened to Jack.

AUDREY

(on phone)

What about the surveillance cams?

TONY (O.S.)

(heard through phone)

The explosion knocked them out…they’re useless.

MATCH CUT TO:

INT. CTU WASHINGTON/BALTIMORE - CONTINUOUS

Tony is walking around looking for updates on the status of the field teams as he talks to Audrey on his CELL PHONE. He walks over to CTU Director SUSAN WALKER, who shakes her head, knowing Tony was asking if there were any updates on Jack’s condition.

TONY

(in phone)

No, no word yet. CTU Agents are searching the garage now…it’s possible that he could have gone dark after the attack in case there are additional hostiles.

SHRINK TO A BOX

SPLIT SCREEN:

BOX #1: SECRET SERVICE VEHICLE - CONTINUOUS

Audrey nods listlessly and wipes tears from her eyes.

BOX #2: CTU - SAME TIME

TONY

(in phone, reassuringly)

They’re doing everything they can to find him, I promise.

BOX #3: INT. PARKING GARAGE - SAME TIME

ANGLE ON JACK BAUER lying on the ground next to a charred car with his eyes closed.

BOX #4: PARKING GARAGE - TRACKING SHOT - SAME TIME

FOLLOW CHASE EDMUNDS as he runs around looking for Jack.

CHASE

Tony, I see him.

TONY

Is he alive?

Audrey holds her breath and bites her nails.

CHASE

I don’t know…

Chase comes over and crouches down next to Jack.

CHASE

Jack, can you hear me? No response. Chase and feels for a pulse.

CHASE

(into radio)

He’s got a pulse…

TONY

Is he breathing?

CHASE

(into radio)

Yeah…I think he’s okay.

(to Jack)

Come on, Jack…wake up.

He shakes Jack until he opens his eyes and slowly comes to. Chase breaths a sigh of relief.

CHASE

Are you alright?

JACK

(clutching injured arm)

Yeah, I’m fine…I must have blacked out for a second.

He clutches his injured arm.

CHASE

Come on. I’m taking you back to CTU medical.

JACK

Where’s Audrey?

CHASE

She’s fine…Secret Service got her out of here before the explosion…Tony instructed them to bring her back to CTU so he could debrief her and have her checked out by medical.

JACK

Did CTU apprehend the hostile?

CHASE

No, he got away before we could establish a hard perimeter. We put out an interagency alert and we’re looking for him now.

JACK

What about Tad Williams?

CHASE

He was killed in the explosion…we think he may have been the target of the attack.

JACK

So you don’t think this was a setup?

CHASE

Not as far as we can tell…it looks like someone either didn’t want him to reveal what he told Audrey, or he may have known more than he told her.

cut to:

INT. OFFICE - ARLINGTON, VA

CHRISTOPHER YARDLEY enters, carrying a briefcase.

He is met by ROGER BRIGGS, a tall, thin man in a navy business suit. They shake hands, as if they are beginning a business meeting.

ROGER

Did you get the laptop?

CHRISTOPHER

Yes. How long will it take you to crack the encryption?

ROGER

Hopefully not long…my contact inside DOD went dark hours ago, but he told me yesterday that everything was in order.

CHRISTOPHER

Alright. Make sure you’re on before the boy makes the call.

Roger nods.

ROGER

Did you get rid of the brother?

CHRISTOPHER

Not yet. We may be able to use him. Don’t worry - he’s being taken care of.

ROGER

Alright.

EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE / INT. BEAT UP CHEVY

MARCO ALMEIDA looks around cautiously and then dials a number on his CELL PHONE as he starts to drive.

MARCO

(into phone)

Alright, I got the money. Where do you want to meet?

UNIDENTIFIED VOICE (O.S.)

(heard through phone)

Crystal City Motel, near the airport.

MARCO

Alright, I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.

cut to:

INT. PARKING GARAGE - DOWNTOWN DC

A medic is wrapping Jack’s arm. Jack hears a PHONE RINGING,
and notices Audrey’s phone lying on the ground. He pulls away from the medic and picks up the phone.

CLOSE UP of phone’s outer screen, which reads:

RICHARD 310-555-8308

JACK

(into his own phone)

Tony, it looks like someone’s calling Audrey from Richard’s phone. How should I handle this?

TONY

Patch it through…we have it all configured to trace.

Jack presses a few buttons and patches the call to Tony.

MATCH CUT TO:

INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR - CONTINUOUS

TONY

(into phone)

Hello?

Tony sits down at a phone that has been set up for him.

RICHARD HELLER is heard through the COMPUTER SPEAKER plugged into the phone.

RICHARD (O.S.)

Uh, hello?

TONY

Richard, it’s Tony. Where are you? Are you okay?

RICHARD (O.S.)

Yeah, I’m fine…where’s my sister?

TONY

She’s on her way here…she’s fine…she’s worried sick about you. Where are you?

RICHARD (O.S.)

At a Secret Service office. I’m bored as hell…I wanted to see if Audrey could get them to take me back to the hotel.

TONY

Richard, listen to me very carefully. The people you’re with are not Secret Service agents. They are terrorists who killed two Secret Service agents this morning and assumed their identities. They called Audrey and threatened to kill you if she didn’t give them sensitive information.

No response.

TONY

Richard?

Tony stamps his foot as he realizes the line has gone dead.

TONY

Damnit!

He walks over to CTU Analyst MOLLIE LANGDON.

TONY

Mollie, did you get a location?

MOLLIE

I got within a ten-mile radius…we needed another ten seconds before we could zero in.

Tony sighs.

TONY

Alright, get what you have to Chase…tell him to start heading in that direction. Did you guys get anywhere with scanning the satellite archives earlier?

MOLLIE

We isolated potential matches, but the license plate was grayed out, so we couldn’t get a conclusive match.

TONY

Alright. Now that we have a ten-mile radius, have someone go through the shots you isolated and see if you can find a match.

He turns to CTU Analyst TINA DOWNEY, who is plugging away at her keyboard. TONY (cont’d) Tina, I need you to call VSP and have them lock down a perimeter five miles outside the target radius.

Tina looks questioningly at CTU Director SUSAN WALKER.

SUSAN

Tina, get moving. Do what he said.

Tina nods and picks up the phone. Tony turns to Susan.

TONY

I’m sorry…I don’t mean to step on your toes…I should probably check with you before ordering your people around.

SUSAN

We don’t have time to battle over turf right now…you have a lot more experience than I do at running CTU. I promise you, if I disagree with you I’ll make it clear.

Tony nods. His phone rings. TRACK WITH HIM as he steps into the conference room to take the call.

SUSAN (O.C.)

(heard in background)

Scott, I need you to compile a list of basements and abandoned buildings in the area and send Chase the schematic of high probability locations. Aaron, put out an interagency alert and make sure you CC state and local agencies.

TONY

(into phone)

Almeida.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. CHEVY CHASE BANK - CONTINUOUS

MICHELLE

Tony, it’s me.

TONY

Is something wrong?

MICHELLE

I’m not sure…did you ever give money to a group called the Committee for a Clean America?

TONY

I don’t think so…what’s that? Some kind of environmental group?

MICHELLE

I don’t know…

TONY

Alright, I’ll look it up. What do you have on the network breach?

MICHELLE

It looks like someone hacked in but I’m having a hard time determining what they did.

Suddenly, the LIGHTS GO OUT in the bank, and the COMPUTER SHUTS OFF.

Michelle hears FOOTSTEPS.

MICHELLE

Hold on a second.

She looks through the hole in the door to the office and suddenly becomes frantic.

MICHELLE

(suddenly)

Tony, I have to go…I’ll call you back.

She drops her cell phone without taking the time to hang up and starts running.

back to:

INT. CTU - CONTINUOUS

TONY

(in phone, frantic)

Michelle, what’s going on?

No response.

TONY

Michelle?

Suddenly, he hears gunshots and panics.

tony

Michelle!!!

CLOSE UP SHOT shows panic on Tony’s face.

fade out.

ACT TWO

FADE IN:

SPLIT SCREEN:

WRITTEN IN CENTER: 03:12:55

BOX #1: EXT. STREET

Marco continues driving, looking nervous.

BOX #2: INT. CTU WASHINGTON/BALTIMORE - SAME TIME

START ON TONY, looking over Mollie’s shoulder at a thermal scan of the location where Richard is believed to be.

WIDE ANGLE: Secret Service agents escort Audrey into the building. Tony looks up and notices how shaken up she looks.

TRACK WITH HIM as he goes over and gives her a hug.

BOX #3: EXT. STREET/INT. CTU VEHICLE - SAME TIME

Jack and Chase are driving to the location they got for Richard Heller.

BOX #4: EXT. CHEVY CHASE BANK - SAME TIME

POLICE CARS with LIGHTS FLASHING surround the scene. Michelle is standing outside a CTU vehicle being checked out by a medic.

EXPAND TO:

INT. CTU - DIRECTOR’S OFFICE

Mollie knocks on the door.

SUSAN

Come in.

Mollie enters and shows Susan a laptop screen.

MOLLIE

We went through the satellite archives in the range we traced the call to, and we have a location that we think might match.

SUSAN

Where is it?

MOLLIE

An abandoned computer store near the airport…the vehicle parked outside of it has a scratch that looks like it matches the one on the Secret Service vehicle used in the abduction.

SUSAN

Alright, get a schematic and upload it to Chase. Good work.

CUT TO:

INT. CTU VEHICLE / EXT. ROCK CREEK PARKWAY

START ON VEHICLE driving down the street. SWITCH TO interior shot. Chase notices that Jack’s arm seems to be bothering him.

CHASE

This is ridiculous…I’m taking you to the hospital.

JACK

You don’t have time, Chase. The only logical explanation for why they made it so easy for us to get Richard’s location is that they plan to move him or kill him before we get there.

CHASE

Why the hell didn’t you let someone pick you up at the garage in the first place?

JACK

Because I promised Audrey I would do everything I could to help get her brother back.

Chase looks disgusted.

CHASE

Oh, I get it. So you’re coming along with me when you should be in Medical so you can play the hero and then maybe she’ll take you back? Is that what this is about?

JACK

(defensively)

No!

Chase scoffs, indicating that he doesn’t believe Jack.

JACK

I’ll get my arm examined as soon as Richard Heller is safe.

CHASE

(under his breath)

Assuming you make it out alive.

JACK

Excuse me?

Chase sighs.

CHASE

Kim just found out a few hours ago that you were alive. Do you have any idea what a cruel joke it would be if something happened to you before she even got to see you?

FLASHES OF ANGER in Jack’s eyes.

JACK

(angrily)

I don’t think you’re in any position to talk to me about what’s good for Kim.

CHASE

What’s that supposed to mean?

JACK

It means I’m not the one who held her back and then lost interest when she was tired of being your full-time babysitter.

CHASE

(ominously)

You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

JACK

All I know is, I shouldn’t have had to die for her to be able to go back to school.

Chase opens his mouth to respond, then changes his mind,
looking ahead angrily as he continues to drive.

CUT TO:

INT. UNDISCLOSED LOCATION

BROOKS, one of the Secret Service imposters, is sitting in a room with Richard Heller when his phone rings.

BROOKS

Excuse me.

He steps out into the hall, leaving PORTER to keep an eye on Richard.

BROOKS

(into phone)

Yeah?

JONES (O.S.)

CTU is on their way…you need to leave now.

BROOKS

If I just leave the kid, won’t they know something’s going on?

JONES (O.S.)

Perhaps. But by the time they figure out what it will be too late. You cannot risk being captured.

BROOKS

Do you want me to tie the kid up?

JONES

No. Let him run away…it will make it harder for CTU. Make sure you leave nothing behind.

BROOKS

Where are the CTU agents?

JONES

About five minutes out.

BROOKS

That’s not enough time…they’ll lock the area down once they find him.

JONES

I have an idea. Check your blackberry in a minute.

CUT TO:

INT. CTU - CONFERENCE ROOM

Audrey is seated at the table. Tony is setting up the laptop for debriefing.

TONY

Alright, almost ready…I need someone to give me an access code.

He picks up the phone.

TONY

(into phone)

Hey…I need write-level access to the NIMS database.

SUSAN (O.S.)

Alright, I’ll call IT.

TONY

(into phone)

Thanks.

He hangs up and turns to Audrey.

TONY

Alright, we’ll be able to get started in a minute.

Audrey nods.

TONY

How are you doing? Are you okay?

AUDREY

Yeah, I’m fine…I was just shook up before.

TONY

I know they got you out before the explosion but I still want you to get checked out by medical after we finish the debrief.

AUDREY

Okay, I will. So what’s going on with Michelle?

Tony sighs.

TONY

They have to bring her in for now.

AUDREY

Why? It was self-defense.

TONY

They said it’s standard procedure. Michelle’s not a federal agent anymore so the rules are a little different…hopefully she’ll just have to answer some questions and then they’ll let her go.

AUDREY

You seem calmer than I’d expect.

TONY

I’m not happy about it, but I’m just so relieved that she’s okay. When I first heard the shots I thought…

His voice trails off. Audrey puts a reassuring hand on his arm.

CUT TO:

INT. UNDISCLOSED LOCATION - ARLINGTON, VA

Brooks comes back into the room where Richard is waiting.

BROOKS

Richard, I’m afraid I have some bad news.

RICHARD

What’s going on?

BROOKS

I just got word from headquarters…apparently your sister’s been unaccounted for for the last half hour.

RICHARD

What do you mean, unaccounted for?

BROOKS

I mean that someone may have forcibly taken her out of the White House…take a look at this footage from White House security cameras.

He shows Richard his Blackberry screen.

ON SCREEN:

Video shows Jack knocking out a Secret Service agent and leading Audrey into a vehicle.

BACK TO SCENE

Richard looks terrified.

BROOKS

Do you have any idea who that man is?

RICHARD

I’m not sure…but he looks familiar…when did he take her?

BROOKS

About a half hour ago…Secret Service is swarming the area looking for her…I need you to think if you know anything that could help us find her.

RICHARD

Send that to Tony.

BROOKS

Who?

RICHARD

Tony Almeida, at DOD. He works with my sister…maybe he’ll be able to help us find her.

BROOKS

Alright, I’ll go do that. Try to stay calm…we’re doing everything we can to find her.

CLOSE ON Richard, a terrified look on his face.

EXT HOTEL - CRYSTAL CITY, VA

Marco looks nervous as he gets out of his car and looks around.

ON BOB

A large, burly man in his late 40’s, approaching Marco.

FULL SHOT

Marco and Bob meet. Marco takes out the SILVER BRIEFCASE he got from Christopher Yardley and hands it to Bob.

Bob opens the briefcase and inspects it.

BOB

You’re $500 short.

MARCO

What the hell? I only lost $200 last time…I was down to $700, but then I got that royal flush, remember?

BOB

Yeah, what about the interest?

MARCO

The last game was last week…you want 100% interest on that?

He gets nervous when he sees Bob getting angry. Suddenly, he sees a BULLET flying right at him from afar.

He jumps out of the way and starts running.

Bob chases him.

He manages to get back to his car and drives away as fast as he can, looking terrified as he drives away.

FADE out.

ACT THREE

FADE IN:

INT. CTU VEHICLE / EXT. I-395 - 03:26:10

CHASE

Alright, this is our exit. Did you get an updated schematic?

JACK

Yeah.

CHASE

Alright. How do you want to configure the field teams?

JACK

It’s your call, Chase. You’re the head of FieldOps.

Chase looks surprised.

CHASE

Alright. I’m going to go in first, and I want you there to back me up. We’ll position backup teams lock down a 100-foot immediate perimeter.

JACK

You need more agents to go inside. We don’t have an accurate count on how many hostiles are inside.

Chase chuckles to himself, having known it wouldn’t be long before Jack stuck his two-sense in despite having said it was his call.

CHASE

Alright, I’ll have Team A follow us in.

JACK

I’m sorry about what I said before. You’re right…I don’t know all the facts.

CHASE

Nobody does…not even Kim.

JACK

What do you mean?

CHASE

I guess I did hold her back a little, although it wasn’t by choice. When I worked at TP I didn’t make enough to pay for Kim to go to school and hire a full-time babysitter for Angela.

JACK

So why the hell didn’t she ask me for money?

CHASE

I don’t know…I told her to, but she refused. I think she still had the feeling that you weren’t happy about us living together.

Jack sighs, feeling guilty when Chase says this.

CHASE

After you…after we thought you died, she inherited enough money to go back to school…around the same time was when Martin Kail at CTU Washington/Baltimore was killed in the line of duty and I was asked to take his place. So we moved here and she got into Hopkins and I convinced CTU to hire an on-site babysitter so I could keep Angela close by. But then when I started working at CTU again, I started getting really scared.

JACK

Scared of what?

CHASE

Scared of something happening to her. I found myself calling her constantly when I was at work, just to make sure she was okay. Eventually I decided the only way to make sure she was safe was to break things off.

JACK

I don’t get it…

CHASE

We had only been together for three months when all hell broke loose with the virus. I’d only had Angela for a month…and after that day, I got really scared that the same thing could happen to me…

JACK

You mean what happened to Tony?

CHASE

Yeah. That’s why I left CTU in the first place. It wasn’t because Driscoll didn’t offer me your job after she fired you. I left because I was afraid of something happening to Kim or Angela if I stayed there. When I started working at CTU DC again, I thought I would get over my fear, but I just couldn’t shake it…

JACK

But you didn’t tell her that?

CHASE

No. I know I should have been straight up with her, but somehow I felt like I couldn’t articulate it…I didn’t want to break things off because I didn’t want to hurt her, so I decided to drive her away instead by being so overprotective and overbearing that it drove her nuts.

Jack sighs.

CHASE

Look, I know I screwed up…I don’t need a lecture.

JACK

Why don’t you tell her now?

CHASE

What difference does it make? She’s moved on…she has a new boyfriend and a new life.

JACK

She deserves to know the truth.

CHASE

I tell you what. When you get the balls to tell Audrey how you really feel, I’ll consider it.

Jack’s initial reaction is indignant, but somehow he finds himself oddly amused by Chase’s comment.

JACK

Alright, you’ve got a deal.

INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR

Two CTU agents escort Michelle into CTU and watch as she walks through the screener, then rejoin her on the other side. Susan approaches.

SUSAN

Ms. Dessler, I’m Susan Walker.

She extends her hand and Michelle shakes it.

SUSAN

I’m sorry to have to bring you in like this. I know the shooting was self-defense and personally I think it’s ridiculous to put you in holding when we could use your help on the floor, but the order comes straight from Division.

MICHELLE

I understand…were they able to recover the data from the bank servers?

SUSAN

The agents who were with you got all the computers…they’re bringing them in now. We don’t know yet whether there was any damage.

Michelle nods.

MICHELLE

Is Tony here?

SUSAN

Yeah, he’s debriefing Audrey Raines on the shooting at the parking garage…I’ll let him know you’re here.

MICHELLE

Thank you.

INT. CTU - COMM DEPARTMENT

The phone rings.

MOLLIE

CTU, Langdon.

CHASE (O.S.)

Mollie, it’s Chase. We’re on site. Do you have a count on how many hostiles are inside?

MOLLIE

Something must be wrong with the thermal scan…it’s only showing two people inside.

INTERCUT WITH: EXT. STREET / INT. CTU VEHICLE

CHASE

You’re saying there’s only one person guarding him?

MOLLIE

I guess…

CHASE

Are you sure this is the right location?

MOLLIE

It’s the only place within the range of the cell phone call where we identified a matching vehicle.

CHASE

Alright. Has the satellite shown anyone leaving the building in the last ten minutes?

MOLLIE

Scott said he hasn’t seen anything.

CHASE

Alright, keep me posted.

CUT TO:

INT. CTU - HOLDING ROOM

Michelle is seated at a table. She gets up when she hears the door open. Tony runs in and wraps his arms around her. She returns the embrace and they stand there for a moment just holding each other as Tony struggles to hold it together.

TONY

Are you okay?

MICHELLE

Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.

TONY

(voice shaky)

When I heard the gunshots I was so scared…

His voice trails off as he starts to cry. Michelle tightens her arms around him.

MICHELLE

I know…I’m sorry.

She waits until his crying subsides, then sits back down at the table. He sits down next to her and grips her hand tightly.

MICHELLE

Did they get an ID on the guy who broke into the bank?

TONY

Forensics is working on it now. The committee you gave me didn’t link up with any of the interagency databases, but Audrey thinks it may be related to all the political stuff going on, so she’s running a campaign finance query now to see if she can find a money trail.

Michelle nods.

TONY

Why the hell are they keeping you in here like a prisoner?

MICHELLE

It’s standard procedure, Tony…I’ll be fine.

Tony’s phone rings before he can respond.

TONY

(into phone)

Yeah? Alright, I’ll be right down.

He hangs up and turns to Michelle. TONY (cont’d) The field teams are on site…they need me downstairs.

MICHELLE

Alright. Tell whoever’s working on the computers that I already scanned volumes 1 through 5 and they seemed fine…make sure they focus on the other volumes, especially 6…that’s what I was working on when the power went out.

TONY

Alright, I’ll let them know.

He squeezes her hand tightly and kisses her softly on the lips before leaving the room.

cut to:

INT. ABANDONED STORE - ARLINGTON, VA

BROOKS

Excuse me…I’ll be right back…I’m going to get an update on your sister.

Richard nods and continues pacing around. He looks surprised when he notices Brooks placing his GUN on the table before leaving the room.

back to:

EXT. STREET - ONE BLOCK AWAY

Other agents are gathered around watching Chase mark up a diagram.

CHASE

Here’s how it’s going to work. I’ve outlined the perimeter here…I want Teams A and B stationed at the points I marked off…local police reinforcements are on their way…

CUT TO:

INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR

TINA

Something’s wrong with the SAT-COMM.

MOLLIE

What are you talking about?

TINA

The position moved…I don’t know how that happened.

MOLLIE

Let me take a look.

She types something on Mollie’s keyboard.

MOLLIE

(cont’d)

Did you forget to segregate the channels?

TINA

No, I did that.

MOLLIE

This doesn’t make sense.

TINA

What?

She sees Tony walking by.

MOLLIE

Tony!

TONY

Hey, what’s going on?

MOLLIE

Did you order a satellite reposition?

TONY

No, why?

MOLLIE

The SAT-Cam got moved…we’re no longer tracking the area around the site…it says that DOD ordered the reposition…I thought DOD was taken off the interagency network because of the network breach.

TONY

Yeah, it was. Let me see.

He starts typing and is baffled by what he finds.

TONY

See if you can get it back in place…I’ll be right back.

TRACK WITH HIM as he walks into conference room.

AUDREY

Hey…what’s going on?

TONY

Jack and Chase are on-sight…they’re going in any minute, but we’ve got a problem.

AUDREY

What’s going on?

TONY

Someone at DOD ordered a satellite reposition and COMM can’t monitor the site.

AUDREY

What do you mean, someone ordered a reposition?

TONY

We don’t know for sure, but it looks like it was probably a breach…someone didn’t want CTU to be able to monitor the area around the site where we believe Richard’s being held.

Audrey sighs.

AUDREY

Can CTU order a preemptory reposition?

TONY

Yeah, but that’s not going to help if someone’s interfering…and we need Michelle to do a remote port scan to identify the source of the breach.

AUDREY

But she’s still in holding?

TONY

Yeah. The order comes straight from Division so we can’t preempt it from here.

AUDREY

Alright. I’ll take care of it.

TONY

Thank you.

CUT TO:

INT. ABANDONED STORE - ARLINGTON, VA

CHASE

(into mouthpiece)

Mollie, what’s the status of the satellite?

MOLLIE

Still out of position…we’re trying to get it back in place now…

CHASE

What’s the problem with it?

MOLLIE

Someone at DOD ordered a reposition. Tony thinks it’s a breach. He’s trying to get Michelle out of holding so she can take a look.

CHASE

Alright. How long until the cameras are back in position?

MOLLIE

At least ten minutes.

CHASE

What about the thermal scan?

MOLLIE

That’s messed up too…it’s only showing one person inside.

SUSAN

Chase, stand down until we have coverage.

CHASE

Roger that.

JACK

Chase, we don’t have ten minutes. For all we know Richard Heller could already be dead.

CHASE

It’s not my call, Jack.

JACK

Fine. I don’t work for CTU. I’m going in now.

CHASE

You can’t just go in by yourself.

His words fall on deaf ears as Jack takes out his gun and runs toward the building.

CHASE

(yelling after him)

Jack!

Jack ignores Chase and continues running.

CHASE

(to himself)

Damn it!

(into mouthpiece)

All teams, hold your positions…we’re going in.

He runs to catch up with Jack.

CHASE

Mollie, do you copy?

MOLLIE

Yeah.

TRACK WITH Jack and Chase as they enter the building. The room is empty.

CHASE

Mollie, are you still showing any movement on the thermal scan?

MOLLIE (O.S.)

Yeah, it looks like he might be below you.

CHASE

Alright.

FOLLOW Jack and Chase down the stairs, guns out in front of them as they cautiously open the door leading out of the stairway.

IN THE BASEMENT

DOOR WHIRLS OPEN TO REVEAL Richard pacing around the room anxiously, frustrated that he can’t get through to anyone with his phone.

He jumps when he hears the door fly open.

CLOSE ON Richard’s face, which changes from frustration to alarm to anger when he sees Jack. He suddenly notices the GUN Brooks left behind.

He hesitates for a moment before grabbing the gun and pointing it at Jack, his hand shaking. Chase takes out his CTU ID and holds it up.

CHASE

Federal agent.

Richard lowers his hand but does not relinquish the gun. He stares at Chase and then back at Jack for a moment, trying to figure out what to do.

After a minute, he looks coldly at Jack and speaks, his voice shaky.

RICHARD

What did you do to my sister?

Jack looks confused, then sighs, thinking that Richard knows who he is and is referring to what happened three years ago.

JACK

It’s a long story, and it’s not the time or the place to talk about it. If you want to know about me and Audrey you’re going to have to talk to her about it. Right now we’ve got to get out of hereÉwhere are the men who brought you here?

RICHARD

What, you want to take out my Secret Service detail too?

JACK

Richard, listen to me. I don’t know what these men told you, and I don’t know what Audrey told you about me, but we’re not here to hurt you. We’re federal agents who were sent here to ensure your safety, and we’ve got to get you out of here.

Richard looks confused.

JACK

Listen to me. I’m going to put down my weapon, and I want you to follow me to the car, alright?

Jack and Chase both put down their weapons.

Richard stands there for a minute, not sure what to do.

He lifts up the gun and points it at Jack.

Chase tries to grab the gun out of his hand.

Suddenly, a GUNSHOT is heard as the gun goes off in the struggle.

Richard and Chase both jump back.

Chase quickly picks up the gun, and we can see that his hand is BLEEDING.

Richard stands there in shock for a moment, trying to process the fact that he just fired a gun.

Jack cautiously approaches, noticing Chase’s hand.

Richard snaps out of his shock and CHARGES at Jack, managing to dodge Jack’s attempt to grab his arm and running out of the room as fast as he can.

FOLLOW Jack up the stairs as he charges after Richard, Chase following close behind him.

He reaches up and is about to grab Richard’s arm when Richard whirls around and punches him, causing him to stumble back a few steps.

Chase shoves him forward to prevent him from falling further down.

Richard manages to get out of the stairwell before Jack and Chase get started again.

intercut with:

INT. CTU - CONTINUOUS

TONY

Jack, what’s going on?

JACK

(into mouthpiece)

He’s running away from us…he must not have heard you when he called earlier…he still thinks the men who brought him there are Secret Service agents.

TONY

I don’t understand…why would he attack you?

JACK

(sadly)

He recognized me. He knows who I am, and he’s a protective brother.

Tony sighs.

TONY

(to Tina)

Go tell Audrey we need her out here now, and tell the guards to bring Xing out of holding and down here in case Richard tries to call him.

MOLLIE

Do we have a tracer on his phone?

TONY

Yeah, it’s all set up. So is my phone, and so’s Audrey’s.

SPLIT SCREEN:

1) Richard running away

2) Jack and Chase running after him

3) Audrey looking bewildered as Tina tells her what happened

4) Marco driving down I-395, looking behind him constantly, a terrified look on his face.

FADE out.

ACT FOUR

FADE IN:

EXT. ABANDONED STORE - 03:42:49

Chase is talking to one of the other agents.

AGENT POWELL

Negative. It’s possible that he could have slipped through before reinforcements were in place.

CHASE

Damn it!

AGENT POWELL

I’m sorry.

Jack rejoins them.

JACK

This doesn’t make any sense…why would the people who took him just leave him there?

CHASE

I don’t know…they may have fled after Richard managed to get through to Tony, calculating that if they left him behind they may be able to slip away.

JACK

But if they were just going to leave him behind why would they go to the trouble of kidnapping him in the first place?

CHASE

I was thinking the same thing.

JACK

This has to be some kind of a decoy…we’ve got to find this kid now so we can figure out what the hell is going on.

AUDREY (O.S.)

Jack, it’s me. I don’t understand…Tony said my brother attacked you and ran away.

JACK

Yeah…listen, can you go somewhere where you can pick up the phone?

AUDREY (O.S.)

Yeah, just a sec.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. CTU - CONTINUOUS

FOLLOW Audrey as she steps away from where everyone is gathered and sits down and picks up the phone at a station off to the side.

AUDREY

What’s going on?

JACK

When you told your brother about everything that happened between us, what did you tell him about me?

AUDREY

What do you mean?

JACK

Your brother seemed to think that I was going to hurt him, and that my goal was to hurt you.

AUDREY

What? That’s ridiculous!

JACK

Is there anything you told him that would make him believe that I would deliberately hurt you?

AUDREY

No, of course not.

JACK

Are you sure?

AUDREY

(getting defensive)

Yes, I’m sure.

JACK

So you have no idea why he would come to that conclusion?

She thinks for a minute and then sighs.

AUDREY

My brother has a tendency to come to his own conclusions about things. When I told him about what happened to Paul, I couldn’t tell him all the details about why you had to do it because of security, so I guess he could have drawn the wrong conclusion. But I don’t know what I could have said to lead him to react the way he did when he saw you.

JACK

Alright.

AUDREY

Jack, you have to know that I never intended for my brother or anyone else to see you in such a negative light.

JACK

Okay.

CUT TO:

INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR - ANOTHER ANGLE - CONTINUOUS

Michelle is typing on a workstation when she notices something strange.

MICHELLE

Tony!

Tony runs over.

TONY

What’s going on?

MICHELLE

Before you called her in here, was Audrey logged onto the DOD satellite?

TONY

No, she was cross-referencing political contributions. Why?

MICHELLE

The log says she ordered a reposition of a DOD satellite less than ten minutes ago.

TONY

That’s impossible…she wasn’t logged onto the DOD network. I was with her almost the entire time…why would she try to screw up her brother’s rescue operation?

MICHELLE

She wouldn’t. Someone must be accessing her logon from remote.

TONY

I thought you checked out her logon and her computer at DOD.

MICHELLE

I did. They both looked fine, and I had her change all of her passwords.

TONY

Could someone have been using a stealth keylogger?

MICHELLE

It’s possible…

O.C., a PHONE RINGS.

XING (O.C.)

Tony, he’s trying to call me.

TONY

Alright, go ahead and answer…make sure he doesn’t hang up…tell him that Audrey’s safe and you’ll put her on the phone.

Xing nods and picks up the phone.

Tony goes over and stands behind him, checking that the tracer is hooked up properly.

He turns around and yells across the room.

TONY

Audrey!

ACROSS THE ROOM, Audrey turns and sees Tony motioning her over. She hurries over to where Xing is sitting. Richard’s voice can be heard through the computer speaker.

RICHARD (O.S.)

Xing, it’s me. Are you okay?

XING

Yeah, I’m fine. Where are you?

RICHARD (O.S.)

I…I don’t know. Listen, Xing, they took my sister.

XING

No, they didn’t. She’s right here.

RICHARD (O.S.)

What?

Xing hands his phone to Audrey.

AUDREY

Richard, it’s me. Are you okay? Where are you?

RICHARD (O.S.)

Audrey? I don’t understand…they said someone kidnapped you.

AUDREY

Who told you that?

MOLLIE (O.C.)

Tony, I got a location.

Tony runs over to Mollie’s station.

TONY

Where is he?

MOLLIE

4122 Columbia Pike. He’s calling from a payphone.

TONY

Jack, do you copy?

JACK (O.S.)

Yeah.

RICHARD (O.S.)

(in background)

My Secret Service detail…they showed me a video. Then the guy in the video came and he tried to take me too.

AUDREY

A video? You mean from three years ago?

RICHARD (O.S.)

No, it looked like it was from today. It was outside the White House…someone knocked out a Secret Service agent and shoved you into a car and drove off.

Audrey sighs, realizing what’s going on.

AUDREY

Richard, listen to me. The man in the video wasn’t kidnapping me…he was helping me get around Secret Service so I could meet with someone in secret.

SPLIT SCREEN

RICHARD

What the hell?

AUDREY

I’ll explain everything when I see you but right now I need you to listen to me very carefully. The man you saw in the video is going to come find you. I need you to stay where you are and wait for him…don’t go with anyone else, no matter who they say they are.

RICHARD

What? Why do you want me to go with him? Who is he?

Audrey sighs, trying to figure out how to explain it.

BOX 1 shows Audrey on the phone.

BOX 2 - CUT TO:

Richard looks around and sees someone coming from his left.

JACK

Alright, I have a visual. I repeat, I have a visual.

END SPLIT - STAY WITH JACK

Jack runs toward the payphone. He looks up and sees something out of the corner of his eye.

PAN UP TO the window of a nearby building.

MOVEMENT can be detected. Suddenly, a SHOT is fired from the building.

FOLLOW the BULLET, descending toward the payphone.

Jack runs toward Richard and shoves him out of the way and to the ground, falling on top of him as they narrowly dodge the bullet.

ACT FIVE

FADE IN:

INT. CTU - CONFERENCE ROOM - 03:53:08

Audrey is sitting at the conference table typing. Tony enters.

TONY

Jack wanted to let me know that he and Richard are on their way back.

Audrey nods, looking relieved.

AUDREY

Did they find the hostile?

TONY

No, he’s still at large…they’re working on it.

Audrey nods.

AUDREY

Alright. I’ll update the White House.

TONY

Listen, Audrey, I know you’ve already got a lot on your mind and I hate to add to your stress, but when Jack gets back here I think maybe you should tell him about what happened two years ago.

Audrey looks bewildered.

AUDREY

Why? It’s only going to make him feel worse…it’s bad enough my dad had to go off on him before.

TONY

I don’t disagree, but with everything that’s going on with you in the news I’m afraid he’s going to find out on his own, and I think it would be better if he heard it straight from you.

Audrey sighs and puts her head down on the table. TONY (cont’d) Just think about it, alright?

AUDREY

Yeah.

cut to:

INT. CTU - LOBBY

Former President DAVID PALMER enters CTU along with Secret Service Agent AARON PIERCE.

Tina is walking by, and seems surprised and a little star-struck when she sees the former president enter the building.

TRACK WITH HER as she walks to Scott’s station.

TINA

(quietly)

What’s President Palmer doing here?

SCOTT

He wanted to come help…he and Tony and Michelle were all in the pictures CTU Los Angeles found at the warehouse, so I think the idea is that if they all put their heads together they may be able to figure out who’s targeting them and why.

Scott gets up and walks with Tina back to the lobby, where Palmer and Pierce are being issued guest badges.

SCOTT

Go find Tony…I think he’s in the conference room.

Tina nods and walks off.

SCOTT

Mr. President, I’m Scott Marshall. Susan Walker, our director, is in a meeting, but she instructed me to get you set up and make sure you have access to whatever you need.

PALMER

Thank you. Is Tony Almeida here?

SCOTT

Yes, sir. Someone went to get him.

PALMER

Alright, thank you. You can go get back to work…I know how hard everyone’s been working here and the last thing I want to do is get in anyone’s way.

Scott nods and walks back to his station as Tony walks over. Palmer steps forward and shakes his hand.

PALMER

Mr. Almeida, I can’t thank you enough. You saved not only our lives but the lives of over 100 Americans.

TONY

I’m…I’m just glad you’re okay, sir.

EXT. STREET / INT. VEHICLE

Jack is driving Richard back to Washington.

JACK

(into radio)

Did you locate the shooter?

CHASE (O.S.)

No, he must have slipped the perimeter.

JACK

Damn it!

He turns to Richard.

JACK

Did you get a visual on the shooter before he fired?

RICHARD

No…I didn’t even see the bullet until you pushed me out of the way…I probably would have been killed if you hadn’t done that.

His voice becomes shaky as realization starts to sink in.

RICHARD

Look, man, I’m really sorry about before. I…I thought…

JACK

You don’t need to apologize. You were being a protective brother. Given the information you had, you did the right thing.

RICHARD

Yeah, I guess so. I know I overreacted, but I just get worried sometimes. Ever since that night two years ago when she tried to…

He stops himself abruptly.

ON JACK

Who suddenly becomes white in the face and swerves the car slightly as he struggles to stay focused on the road.

JACK

Ever since she what?

RICHARD

Nothing, nothing…forget I said anything.

Jack sighs.

JACK

Alright, look, it’s none of my business, but whatever happened two years ago, does your father know about it?

RICHARD

Yeah.

Jack nods and stares ahead, his face pained with a mixture of anguish, panic, and anger.

cut to:

INT. CTU - CONFERENCE ROOM

TONY

Michelle will be in here in a couple minutes…she’s dealing with a serious breach to the interagency network.

PALMER

Understood. I reviewed the intelligence CTU Los Angeles sent over, and I believe they may have a thread that looks promising.

TONY

Who do they think it is?

PALMER

Do you remember the first time I visited Los Angeles after taking office?

TONY

How could I forget? We were up most of the night trying to track down a bunch of racist skinheads who wanted to end your presidency before it really even begun.

PALMER

According to the report I read about an hour ago, the ringleader of that group was released from prison less than a week ago.

TONY

Hold on a second. You think everything that’s happened today is the work of domestic skinheads?

PALMER

It seems far-fetched to me too, but several other pieces of evidence support that conclusion.

Tony nods.

PALMER

I read the file from the incident, and from what I understand, you disobeyed the orders of your superiors when questioning a suspect and tracking down a lead based on information obtained by questioning the suspect.

TONY

Yeah, Division ordered us to treat it like a law enforcement case rather than an intelligence case because it dealt with domestic hate groups. I didn’t think it made sense to wait until after you were dead to investigate.

Palmer smiles slightly.

PALMER

And Michelle helped you get around CTU security and work up your lead after being detained for using unauthorized interrogation methods?

TONY

Yes, sir. She trusted me…she knew we didn’t have time to go through traditional formalities.

PALMER

If I remember correctly, while Jack Bauer was inactive. Am I right?

TONY

Yeah…if Jack had been there he’d have taken me out of play because I wasn’t getting the information fast enough.

Palmer chuckles.

PALMER

That’s probably true.

TONY

So you think that’s why there were pictures of you, me, and Michelle, but none of Jack?

PALMER

I think given what we know it’s the most logical conclusion.

TONY

And I guess that fits in with what Audrey found.

PALMER

What did she find?

TONY

Someone she used to know on Capitol Hill gave her some information regarding a vote-rigging scheme in Florida that we think was connected to everything that’s been going on.

PALMER

A vote rigging conspiracy?

TONY

Yeah. I’m embarrassed to admit that I don’t really understand it…let me go get Audrey…she can explain it better than I can.

cut to:

INT. CTU - UPSTAIRS OFFICE

Audrey is on the phone.

AUDREY

(on phone)

Alright, I’ll update CTU…let me know when you have the source code for the voting software.

She hangs up as Tony comes in.

AUDREY

I just talked to the SAC at CTU Miami…she said they’ll have the source code within the hour.

TONY

What about the election officials who purchased the software?

AUDREY

I’m sure they didn’t have anything to do with it…most of them are Democrats.

TONY

I understand that, but they might have information about the people who sold it to them.

AUDREY

So what? You want me to order them to subpoena the Florida Secretary of State?

TONY

I don’t think we have a choice…the fact that they made it so easy to find your brother means there’s got to be something bigger going on here…his kidnapping had to be a diversion.

AUDREY

Alright, I’ll call them back.

TONY

Thanks. Listen, President Palmer’s here…we’re trying to figure out who wants us dead and what that has to do with everything else that’s been happening…I need your help explaining to him everything you got from Tad.

AUDREY

Alright, I’ll be right there.

Tony starts walking back toward the stairs when his phone rings.

TONY

(into phone)

Almeida.

MARCO (O.S.)

(frantic)

Tony, it’s Marco…you’ve got to help me!

TONY

Marco? What’s going on?

SPLIT SCREEN

MARCO

Someone’s trying to kill me!

TRACK WITH TONY as he ducks into the bullpen to keep the conversation private.

TONY

What? Who’s trying to kill you?

MARCO

I…I don’t know…I had to meet someone in the parking lot of the Sheraton in Crystal City and as I was leaving someone fired at me from afar, and then someone started chasing me to my car.

TONY

And you have no idea who the guy chasing you was?

MARCO

Um, I think he said his name was Bob…he was driving a silver Buick…that’s all I know.

TONY

Jesus Christ, Marco…have you been gambling again?

MARCO

Not exactly. I, um…I just had to pay off some debts…I still owed some money and I was trying to pay that off.

TONY

So where did you get the money?

MARCO

Alright, please don’t kill me…

TONY

(nervous)

What?

MARCO

Okay, so the other day this guy called me and he offered me $10,000 for your laptop…so I figured I could sell it and buy you a new one for less than that and use the extra to pay off what I owed.

(beat)

TONY

YOU SOLD MY LAPTOP?

MARCO

I…I’m gonna buy you a new one, I swear. They just wanted yours because they said it had some software that wasn’t commercially available.

TONY

Marco, are you out of your mind? I’m a senior advisor to the Secretary of Defense…do you have any idea how much classified information is on that thing?

MARCO

I thought you blocked all that off…I checked, and all of your files were password protected.

TONY

Just because they were password protected doesn’t mean that someone can’t get around that if they know what they’re doing. Jesus,
Marco…where are you?

MARCO

I’m in my car, on the GW Parkway.

TONY

Alright, listen to me. I want you to call 9-11 and have dispatch pick you up…I’ll have someone get you from there.

MARCO

I…I can’t go to the police.

TONY

Yes you can. Marco, listen to me very carefully. There’s a very good chance that whoever wanted my laptop is connected to everything that’s been happening today. You may have information that could help us prevent a terrorist attack. If you tell us what you know about these people I promise you that you won’t be prosecuted for gambling or for anything you did to try to pay off your debts, alright?

Marco nods and is about to verbalize agreement when he sees a SILVER BUICK in his rearview mirror.

Panicked, he SWERVES OFF THE ROAD into the forest.

END SPLIT - STAY WITH TONY

TONY

Marco, are you still there? Marco? MARCO?

We hear a BEEP as the call gets disconnected.

Tony frantically dials his brother’s number, which kicks right into voicemail.

TONY’S POV:

Room starts shaking and spinning.

BACK TO SCENE

CLOSE ON Tony, wiping sweat off his forehead as he leans against the wall and tries to prevent himself from going into a complete panic.

FADE OUT.
